IWI
think it pretty much started with my brother Mike and his great
record collection. He was
a D.J. in high-school and
I mean he had everything from McCartney’s Venus and Mars to Echo
and the Bunnymen. Rick and I of course has access to a lot of this same
music. Whereas Rick went more for the Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of
Lyfe style, I fell into the fray of the ‘Prog Rock‘ world.
Steve Howe’s Yes and Gabriel’s Genesis were the mainstay
throughout my high-school years. I can still sit down with a few
select people and
appreciate what they did.
WOnce Rick and I started working together, as you can imagine it was a bit chaotic.
I found our styles so different and hard to direct into one sound. But we persevered,
carried by the fact that we both knew we were good. Since Naze, Rick, and I started
working together our influences, I guess, have been pretty much the same. To
me it became clear that for The Wells to really work, we had to break it down
and find common ground.
WThe Beatles came late to my attention all
things considered. Always knew the name, always knew the songs but never
up ‘till then looked into them too
much. The impact was great. Their musicianship, songwriting and just plain energy
was infectious and I don’t think Naze or Rick can deny that it was
as good a common ground as any to grow from. Great song writers Paul Simon,
David
Bowie
and Dylan all took their place with me along with the great musical theatrics
of Nina Simone, Tom Waites and Webber to name a few.
Everything music and artist alike have given me up ‘till now has
not in any way specialized or focused my direction or intention but has
only
seemed to broaden the canvas for new ideas.
